Streaming movies are all the rage these days, and the major video rental outfits are upgrading their services accordingly: Netflix recently announced several key upgrades, including a streaming only (no physical media) plan, support for Android streaming, and Dolby Digital Plus audio. Of course, if you're a regular HTWR reader, it's probably that last one that's most enticing for you: this will be Netflix' first ever use of a streaming surround codec, and even though DD+ is a lossy codec, it does have the potential to sound mighty, mighty fine. Look for DD+ Netflix hardware support in your PS3 only for now; other devices are sure to follow suit shortly.
Other VOD news comes courtesy rental kiosk giant Redbox, who recently announced they'll be looking to
offer streaming rentals sometime in 2011. Though firm details are still thin on the ground, word is Redbox is currently in talks with several potential online partners and are debating whether to offer a monthly plan with several free kiosk rentals, or an a la carte option similar to iTunes. Watch this space for news as it becomes available.
