Yamaha's New Blu-Ray Disc Player
Yamaha has just announced a new Blu-Ray player that, to the best of my knowledge, is the first player to offer "Deep Color" ouput.
The BD-S2900 should start shipping out to vendors later on this month and with the fairly hefty asking price of $1199.95. Man.. do I at least get a free HDMI cable and some popcorn with that? Maybe a root beer or something?
Jokes and high price point aside, this is pretty cool news. Deep color, if you aren't familiar, is a new level of color output that can only be brought to you by Blu-Ray discs and deep color compatible TVs. You can thank HDMI 1.3 for making it possible. HDMI version 1.3 allows for HUGE amounts of information to be passed from your video source to your TV. That means that there are millions of shades of color that we've never seen produced on a TV before just now coming available. The result should be a more realistic, vibrant picture-who doesn't want that?
This player is built on the same high quality chassis style that Yammy's high end receivers offer and likely features some premium internal components. Of course, it should also do a great job of upscaling all of your standard DVDs to look great on that fancy new flat panel TV of yours. Still, the price tag is a little on the high side for me and probably most attractive to those of you who live in the "early adopter" camp.
I applaud Yamaha for coming out with such a gorgeous piece of electronics. As soon as they make it affordable, I'm in. Unless some other manufacturer beats them to the punch.
