The Home Entertainment Show came to a quiet end on Mothers Day... Yes, Mother’s Day. OOPS. I’m not sure who was responsible for scheduling… but I hope they schedule around this particular holiday in the future.
My brother Mike joined me in New York Sunday evening to begin the road trip portion of this adventure. As a fellow pilot, he can share the navigation, communication, and piloting chores for the remainder of the road trip. Although Lorraine is not a certified pilot, she’s a VERY capable navigator, and co-pilot, and will be missed.
Every road trip needs a theme song… and ours is Take the Long Way Home by Super Tramp. Honoring that theme of the song, we’re taking a shortcut to Oregon through Key West Florida. I know… I’ve since looked on the map… there are shorter options, but we’re already here.
The best laid plans of mice and men are laid waste when weather appears. So much for the two hours of flight planning we did the night before. Weather cooperated in getting us South only after we diverted from the East coast to the West coast of Florida to avoid severe thunder activity.
I experienced a first for me as we descended into the Keys for landing, it actually began to rain in the cockpit… yes actual drops of water began falling on us from the condensation of the humidity on our colder plane interior. It took a few minutes for us to figure out what was happening, since it was not raining outside.
Although it was a long day in the plane, we were rewarded by some wonderful views.
A quick meal, a long sleep, and it’s off to Mississippi early to avoid developing thunder storms forecasted for later in the afternoon.
I’m beginning to feel like I’m being chased from state to state by the weather gods looking for a sacrifice… Mike and I should probably play Safety Dance in the plane tomorrow to keep them at bay, or we run the risk of becoming a real life version of one of my favorite Kansas songs…… Dust in the Wind.
